What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a vital part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is widely practised around the world. Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into acupressure points along the meridians to release blockages, balance the flow of energy (Chi or Qi) and stimulate the body’s healing response.

What Happens During Acupuncture Appointment?

Consultation

If you are a new acupuncture client, we ask that you arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment to complete our client information form. During the consultation, our experienced acupuncturist will review your health history and discuss any symptoms, concerns or questions you may have.

Examination

The tongue and pulse are important diagnostic tools in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and are used to assess the overall health and balance of the body’s internal organs and energy systems. So before starting your treatment, the acupuncturist will examine your tongue and take your pulse.

The tongue’s colour, shape and coating are noted, along with the pulse quality, strength, rhythm and depth at various locations along the wrist. Based on this information, the acupuncturist will develop a targeted treatment program tailored to your unique health needs. Other TCM therapies, such as herbal medicine or dietary changes may be recommended as part of your treatment program.

Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture treatment is performed with the client lying on a comfortable treatment table. During the treatment, the acupuncturist inserts fine, sterile needles into specific acupoints on the body. The needles are then left in place for between 15-30 minutes and are removed at the end of the treatment.

Acupuncture For Pain Relief

Acupuncture has been proven effective at treating chronic pain in many studies. It helps to regulate the nervous system and stimulates the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller. It also improves blood flow, which can help reduce inflammation and help relieve muscle tension, pain and stiffness.

Acupuncture is a popular complementary natural therapy for pregnancy and fertility. It can help regulate the menstrual cycle to make periods more predictable, relieve the aches and pains associated with pregnancy, help reduce morning sickness and assist in preparing your body for labour.

Acupuncture has been shown to improve the success rates of IVF by increasing blood flow to the uterus, reducing stress, and improving overall reproductive function. (2018 Journal Of Obstetrics & Gynaecology).

How much does acupuncture cost?

An initial consultation, including treatment, is $130, and follow-up appointments are $90.00. Private health rebates may be available subject to your policy inclusions.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are much thinner (about the width of a hair) than hypodermic needles used for injections, so you barely feel them. Some people experience a slight prick or tingling sensation during needle insertion, but treatments are generally not considered to be painful.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is considered a safe and effective complementary treatment for a wide range of conditions and should always be performed by a qualified practitioner using sterile needles.

What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?

Although both techniques use needles, there are some key differences. Acupuncture is based on a holistic philosophy and is used to treat the whole body, while dry needling specifically treats musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Additionally, acupuncture needles are often inserted at shallower depths than dry needling, and the needles are often left in place for longer periods of time.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The number of acupuncture treatments required will vary depending on the condition being treated. Some conditions can be treated within 1-3 sessions, whilst others, like fertility issues, may require regular sessions over a more extended time period to achieve optimal results.

How do I know if acupuncture is right for me?

Acupuncture can benefit many people, but whether or not it is right for you depends on your individual needs and circumstances. If you have underlying health conditions, it is important that you consult with your healthcare provider to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your needs.

What are the meridians used in acupuncture?

The meridians are the pathways through which Qi flows in the body. There are 12 primary meridians and 8 extraordinary meridians, each of which is believed to be connected to specific organs, muscles, and bones in the body.

What are acupuncture points?

Acupuncture points are specific points on the meridians where acupuncture needles are inserted to access and influence the flow of Qi in the body.
